Prepare your group
Prepare children for a first fishing trip
Set expectations for the boat, the crew and a changing day on the water.
A first trip is easier when children know what to expect. Explain that the crew will show the equipment and direct activities, and that fishing includes waiting as well as catching. Ask the operator about age-specific needs before choosing the trip.
Work through it
- Discuss the group’s ages and experience with the captain. Confirm the appropriate trip option, required equipment and anything the family should bring.
- Plan clothing, sun protection, food and drinks according to the operator’s current instructions. Ask about onboard facilities and storage.
- Explain that weather and fishing conditions can change the plan. Encourage children to ask the crew for help and follow instructions around tackle and the boat.
Check your result
- The captain knows the group’s needs.
- Packing follows current instructions.
- Children understand that the crew directs activities.
